How Does Living Liver Donation Work? Get details about Liver transplant donor risks, requirements, Adult liver donation and liver transplant in children.

Our body system has an innate capacity to regenerate the damaged organ. However, it requires replenishment when the damage or injury scars go beyond a limit.

The same thing happens to the liver also. Both children and adults get it spoiled due to:

  • Long-standing diseases
  • Generalized diseases
  • Primary tumors.

However, reasons are not at par for children and adults.

Reasons for liver transplant in children

  • The commonest reason is Biliary Artesia. Ducts transferring bile from the liver to the gall bladder are often not appropriately developed. Doctors conduct reconstructive surgery to correct the issue.
  • The Artesia helps in digestion too.
  • Jaundice in the initial life months often causes liver failure.

Adult liver donation requirements

The main reason behind adult liver damage is chronic Hepatitis C infection. Other reasons are:

  • Hepatitis B virus infection.
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases.
  • Primary Biliary Cirrhosis.
  • Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis.

Another dominant condition that leads to liver transplant is:

  • The hepatoblastoma tumor for children.
  • The hepatocellular carcinoma in adults.

Using overdosed ‘P’ drugs often causes acute liver failure.

Liver transplant donor risks

Doctors declare Liver Donation as one of the safest operations. However, this major surgery brings about various complications.

These do not sustain for long. Again, you will need medical consultation for appropriate redress.

A donor usually bears the following side effects:

  • Possible allergic reactions. It generally comes from anesthetic medicines.
  • Nausea.
  • Pain.
  • Other uncanny discomforts.
  • Infections at the incision spots.
  • Bleeding. Often this requires a blood transfusion.
  • Clotting of blood.
  • Pneumonia.
  • Leakage of Bile.
  • Issues with bile ducts.
  • Hernia.
  • Bowel clearance issues
  • Scar tissue formation.
  • Emotional issues.

Your organ will recuperate itself by more than 90% with time. The most rapid regeneration occurs in the first two months after surgery. The growth continues for at least one year. By that time, most of your organs will recover.

The revival process happens in stages after a successful Liver Donation surgery. These involve:

During the first week after surgery

You will stay in the hospital for almost a week past the surgery. The doctor’s team will not allow working for about one to one-and-a-half months.

From day four, you will feel the start of recovery. Your urination and toilet processes will start to become normal again.

Usually, they discharge such a patient after the completion of a week. You may feel fatigued, but it does not form an issue.

They will prescribe medications for oral consumption on release.

In three months hence

The medical team will encourage you to start normal activities. But, there is nothing to make haste.

Do not lift a weight of more than 15 lbs for the first weeks. Such loft will not cross thirty during the three-month mark.

Call the transplant clinic in case of any fever or drainage from the incision.

After completion of the first year

It becomes the duty of the trained clinical team to follow you closely during the recovery period.

They will ask you to visit the clinic after one week after discharge. A team member will assess your condition.

H/she will also conduct blood tests to check your overall medical health.

The doctor team will visit you frequently during the first year. They want to confirm that you are progressing at the right pace.

You may take more than six months to regain normalcy,

During this period, they won’t permit smoking or consuming alcoholic drinks. They will also discourage absorbing medicines or herbal remedies that are toxic to the liver.

Women do not get permission to conceive during the first year after liver donation surgery.

After five years

At the end of the first year, you will appear at the transplant clinic. The treatment team will call you for the first year-round checkup.

Your medical team will ask you to come for another checkup round at the end of the 2nd year.

This way you will continue visiting them till the completion of five years. They will encourage you to continue this.

You are always welcome to visit the center also in between any two periods if needed.

You can call the transplant center in case you feel ill. You can also visit them for an additional follow-up check.

With checkup repetition, both the clinic and your family doctor get updated information about your organ development progress.

Usually, the donor team collects your primary care physician’s contact details while they discharge you from the hospital.

It is customary for them to gather information about your progress from your family physician.

Both teams are informed and assure your protectiveness.
