Spine Surgery Overview

The Human body consists of muscles, bones, and nerves. The spine is a Rod like bone called a Vertebral column (or spinal Column) allocated in the back of the human body. It starts from the neck and runs till the hip that is composed of 33 vertebrae. The 33 vertebrae further subdivide into the Cervical, Thorax, Lumbar, Sacrum, and Coccyx.

The Spine has Numerous Functions:

  1. Protection - The vital function of the spine is to protect the spinal cord and nerve roots. It helps in the overall communication of the body and brain. Any Damage or disorder can lead to failure in message transmission between the body and brain.
  2. Mobility and Flexibility of the Body - The complete range of motion in the human body based on the spine from the extension, flexion, side bending (left & right) to Rotation.
  3. Body Structure - The crucial function of the spine is it helps in the structural support of the body, we can stand, sit, walk, or run only because of the spine. It helps to maintain the balance of the body and overall weight distribution.
  4. Anchor Point - The spine serves as a source of anchor for the connection of the ligament, tendons, and muscles. Therefore, serve as a connecting device.

Spine Surgery

Damage and pressure on the nerve because of the compression of the spine can lead to pain and numbness. However, in some situations, the spine might lose the rigidness and ability to support the body. Spine surgery is ideal for such a situation or condition.

Type of spine surgery:

1.) Laminectomy: This surgery is performed when there is pain, numbness, or weakness due to the squeezing of the nerve or tapering of the spinal canal as a cause of spinal stenosis. In this surgery, a small piece of the rod-like covering called the lamina is removed to open the spinal column depending upon the cases to relieve the nerve pressure.

2.) Laminotomy: It is similar to laminectomy the only difference is a smaller port of bone is removed from the lamina as compare to the laminectomy. Laminectomy and laminotomy are known as decompression surgery. Decompression defines the removal of the tissue that compresses the nerve of the spinal cord.

3.) Discectomy or Microdiscectomy: the surgical process of removal of a whole disk as a cause of herniation or compression of the nerve or spinal cord. Laminectomy and Discectomy are performed together. Microdiscectomy is a Minimally Invasive surgery.

4.) Foraminotomy: The Surgical process of the removal of tissue and bone at intervertebral foramina, a narrow passage or hole from which nerve leaves the spinal column.

5.) Spine Fusion: The Surgical procedure for the removal of spine disc to join two or more vertebrae with the bone grafts. It may or may not involve the use of screws or rods. It may lead to the loss of temporary mobility.

6.) Disc Replacement: The surgical procedure of replacing a severely damaged or complicated disc with an artificial disc.
